This section provides general and specific information on a number of common childhood health conditions. It will help your child (and yourself) better understand how to manage their condition.

These modules are helpful both to children with the condition as well as their friends, family, classmates, and even teachers and babysitters.

Children can find out how to help themselves or their friends who may need to be careful in order to stay healthy. Knowing the ways to make things better and not worse will help everyone.

DIABETES: DAY BY DAY

Join Megan for a day as she goes through four activities while trying to keep her diabetes under control. First, she needs to pack her backpack full of important items that she may need later in the day.

Then she needs to choose her meal carefully, making sure she is getting the right amount of carbohydrates. During her class’ field trip to the zoo, she has a little trouble since her blood glucose level is a little low. Her friend has to help Megan by choosing a good sugar snack for her. Later when she is getting ready for bed, she chooses a spot for her injection and helps her dad give her insulin. Although Megan is a cheerful girl who knows how to look after herself well, she still needs her family, friend and teacher to help and support her.

This module has many interactive elements where the viewer can help Megan make important choices.

The module is 11 minutes long and is geared to children aged 7 to 9.

DIABETES: JUSTIN'S DAY

The narrator invites the viewer to help Justin get through his day as best as he can. Justin has diabetes and he wants to go to summer camp. He needs to show his parents that he is responsible enough to look after himself.

The viewer is guided through 6 scenarios that Justin has to deal with: skipping tests, keeping an accurate log book, exercise and blood sugar, snacks and schedules, special event eating, adjusting insulin doses, and wearing a medical alert bracelet. Justin is a busy boy who doesn’t want his diabetes to get in his way and keep him from going to camp.

This module is 10 minutes long and is geared to children aged 9 to 12.

THE CARB COUNT GAME

Viewers can play this game and reinforce the concept of counting carbohydrates at every meal at the same time.

 

Viewers choose what meal they would like, and choose a carbohydrate amount that will be their limit for that meal.

  They can then drag various foods, and watch as the carbohydrate count goes up.

The carbohydrate amounts listed for each type of food are accurate and help parents and children to calculate correct meals in the ‘real world’.

 

This module lasts 5 minutes or more and is geared to all age groups.

WHIMSEY'S ASTHMA:

Whimsey has asthma and must make healthy choices every day so that her asthma does not ‘act up’. Given 6 scenarios, viewers have the chance to choose the healthier choice.

These scenarios include cold weather, pets, strong smells, dust, and smoke. Though she is sick, Whimsey is enjoying herself and tries to stay healthy while having fun at the same time.
As the main module loads, kids can try to solve a puzzle preloader as they are waiting.

The module itself is 5 minutes lon and is geared to children aged 5 to 7.

CONCENTRATE ON ASTHMA

Brayden has asthma, but he doesn’t let it get in his way of having fun. He has learned what triggers his asthma attacks, so he knows what to stay away from.

Help Brayden play a concentration memory game on his computer and learn the choices he needs to make to stay healthy.
As the main module loads, kids have the option of playing an asthma trigger shooting game.

This module is 8 minutes long and is geared to children aged 8 to 10.

ASTHMA, IT'S YOUR CHOICE.

This is a multiple choice game in which the viewer is lead through a number of asthma scenarios, from taking their medication, to making healthy choices at school.

If the viewer makes unhealthy choices, they will be taken to the emergency room and has to try the game again.

This module is 6 minutes long and is geared to children aged 10 to 13 years.

RADIATION: WHAT'S IT LIKE?

Michel explains what Radiation Therapy is like and how it works. He talks about how the therapists prepared him for radiation, describes the equipment they used, and what he needed to do to help the therapists do their job well.


This module is 8 minutes long and is geared to children aged 5 to 10.

DEREK'S THRILLING ADVENTURE OVER THE AGONY OF DA' FEET

Derek fell off his skateboard and broke his leg. Follow Derek through 9 different moments in his adventure as he meets with doctors and nurses, learns how to manage his pain, learns why and how we feel pain, and what helps us when when we are in pain.

 

Topics covered in this module are: Pain medications, quantifying pain and talking about it, using distraction techniques to help with pain, the use of physiotherapy and massage, and guided imagery techniques.

By being a part of each of Derek's moments children can learn how Derek managed the pain he was feeling.

This module is broken into 9 separate sections of varying lengths. Added together they are 15 minutes long.
The module is geared to children aged 8 to 12.

The module contains stories about kids or friends of kids who have epilepsy, suggestions for how to keep safe if you have epilepsy, and guidelines for school, sports and medication.

This module has 16 separate interactive elements of varying lengths. It takes at least 20 minutes to go through all of them.
The module is geared to children aged 9 to 14.
